If Wells' brief stint with 20th Century had been a total misdirected failure, it would be easier to dismiss. It wasn't, though.

Wells continued to deliver pop-flavored soul in just as good Everlovin Boy - Mary Wells - Mary Wells voice as ever, and in fact had a few small hits. The problem is not so much approach as quality. Her material, though not bad, lacked the special magic of her best Motown classics; the production was somewhat thinner as well.

This track anthology assembles her best 20th Century performances, including her singles some of them previously unavailable on albumsongs from her first 20th Century LP, and three previously unreleased songs. Though it's principally of interest to Wells fans, it's better than you might expect, worth hearing for the pleasure of Wells' voice if not the average material.

  5. Feb 12,  · "Use Your Head", "Never, Never Leave Me", "Everloving Boy" and others are the mellowest, most beautiful items in her repertoire. I've read them described as a cross between Motown and New York uptown soul. My only nit to pick with this superb album is that her "Mary Wells Sings Love Songs to the Beatles" is completely overlooked.5/5(2).
