I listen to a lot of demos and it's been a long time since I've heard something that's left such a good taste in my mouth as this. There are eight tracks on Game Of Minds - Dystopia - Decay release, quite a lot for a demo, but four of them are instrumentals.

If you think this will be polished like Demonized, then think again. The production is a lot harsher, but the instruments and vocals are at an appropriate level so you can make everything out perfectly. Think " Nightside Eclipse" for level of quality - treble guitars, fast drumming, and just the right dose of keyboard melody laced on .In The Weep Of The Ocean - Lloth - Dancing In The Dark Lakes Of Evil to carry each song. The vocals are raspy black metal screeches, but have a lot of reverb on them to give the impression they're being screamed from within a deep dungeon: hard to imagine they're being sung by the Tristessa we know now.

The intro and outro instrumentals remind me of a Commodore Amiga game loading screen melody - think "X-Out" or "Shadow of the Beast": morbid synth sounds and an electronic tolling bell - it really works! The piece which really stands out is " In the Weep of the Ocean" which sums up the demo perfectly. You really feel as if you're standing alone on shore, grey skies overhead, staring out at the horizon. I've not heard "Doomed Dark Years", Astarte's first full length, but I have it on order and I hope that it resembles this: near-perfect black metal: dark, harsh, but enough atmosphere to carry the listener away to a fantasy place.

  1. Mists swirled around Santa Barbara harbor, all but obscuring the stars and moon over head. Impossibly, a portion of these mists congealed until three distinct figures stood on a small hill, looking out at the coast, and, more specifically, a well lighted area on that coastline.

  5. There are eight tracks on this release, quite a lot for a demo, but four of them are instrumentals. One thing Astarte (known as Lloth at this point) excel at are their instrumentals (for example "Lloth" on Sirens and "Everlast II (Phoenix Rising)" on Demonized), and "Dancing in .
