I bought the Doggett collection and the four CD collection of saxophone honkers as trip down Memory Lane. This was the kind of music the chaperones at Miss Lollipops Confession - Various - The Big Horn: The History Of Honkin & Screamin Saxophone high school sock hops didn't want us to listen to in the early to mid-fifties, but we listened any way.

The Doggett group always included a Down South guitar player and a drummer, sounding much like a pre-show version of the wildly successful Jimmy Smith trio in the very late fifties and early sixties. It's satisfying, if unchallenging, music, and it reminds me of my youth, so I'm glad I got it.

It makes great cruising music while driving. How can I forget dancing, my body as close as I could get it to the girl I was dancing with, to Earl Bostic's great "Flamingo. In general, this music came from big band swing, simplifying and roughing up the beat and emphasizing the potential of the alto and tenor saxes to scream and preach like human voices, or it came straight from the blues and boogie woogie.

There are cuts in this collection! Again, it's great cruising music. There's a huge selection of songs and artists and every track is great! The accompanying booklet is loaded with facts about the music and the musicians. The sound quality of this set is excellent. Proper has come up with yet another value-packed box set! The sound quality is exceptional for the era and venue variation of the recordings. The variety is wide ranging and the talent represented is quite impressive. This set contains a very large number of music tracks for the price and the value is as good as it gets.

Essentially every track is a good one. I The Truth - Coyote Shivers - Coyote Shivers recommend this 4 CD set if you like a wailing sax with a strong musical backing in an early rock and roll style.

It's the best purchase I have made in a long time. Honkin' and Screamin'! Not much else to add to that. If your a sax-man and into rock and roll The state-of-mind

  5. The last mentioned band returned to the stage to back up the first of the American gusts, the great Big Jay McNeely who commenced his act by walking from the back of the hall to the stage honking and blowing his saxophone. He then launched into his big hit "There's Something On Your Mind" which was followed by a tribute to his "Big Fat Mama.
