After the band's official formation in in Coventry, following the release of a song entitled "The Selecter" by an unofficial incarnation of the band, the band's hit single "On My Radio" prompted their labels 2 Tone and Chrysalis to ask the band to record their debut album.
Working with producer Errol Ross, the Selecter recorded the album at Horizon Shotgun - Various - The New Untouchables Presents Modstock 21st Century Club Classics over two months.
The album contains original material, mostly composed by band founder and guitarist Neol Davies, as well as numerous ska and reggae cover versions, in a similar fashion to the Specials' debut album. The album was released in February on 2 Tone records. The record was commercially successful, charting at number 5 in the United Kingdom. The album was also critically successful, and has had lasting praise in the ensuing years. Although the band's accompanying 2 On 2 Tour with several other 2 Tone acts was fraught with violence, it also helped achieve, in part, the album's commercial success.

After reforming inMade in Britain was conceived after a PR company requested lead vocalist Pauline Black record a new album with the Selecter to coincide with her autobiography Black by Design.
Black took the idea to record new material with the band seriously. The album was written and recorded quickly with production from several of the band members, with the experience pleasing band members. The album, which uses a traditional ska and 2 Tone sound, found the band exploring their own and the public's relationship with the genre's equality, multiracial message.
Mostly written by Black, the album's lyrics address numerous related social and political issues in s multiracial Britain. The album was promoted with the singles "Big in the Body, Small in the Mind" and "Back to Black", Out On The Streets - The Selecter - Too Much Pressure was released to positive reviews from critics, who saw the album's lyrics as relevant in the political climate of the day.
