Reteaming with the BandBob Dylan winds up with an album that recalls New Morning more than The Basement Tapessince Planet Waves is given to a relaxed intimate tone -- all the more appropriate for a collection of modest songs about domestic life. As such, it may seem a little anticlimactic since it has none of the wildness of the best Dylan and Band music of the '60s -- just an approximation of the homespun rusticness.

Considering that the record was knocked out in the course of three days, its unassuming nature shouldn't be a surprise, and sometimes it's as much a flaw as a virtue, since there are several cuts that float into the ether. Still, it is a virtue in Tough Mama - Bob Dylan - Planet Wavesas there are moments -- "On a Night Like This," "Something There Is About You," the lovely "Forever Young" -- where it just gels, almost making the diffuse nature of the rest of the record acceptable.

  1. Jul 11,  · As a whole, Planet Waves is a great album for both Dylan and The Band fans alike. I don't know if I'd recommend it as a starter album for anyone who is just starting to get into Dylan, but it is definitely worth checking out, especially if you are into the /5().
  2. His much-covered “Forever Young” represented a new level of openhearted compassion, and the degree of unbridled emotional commitment expressed on “Wedding Song” is striking, especially when combined with those masterful poetic powers. Dylan was approaching his mids when Planet Waves was made, and maturity clearly suited him.

  7. Clinton Heylin also singled out Dylan's performances, noting that "Tough Mama" featured "one of his raunchiest vocals". Arguably the most celebrated song on Planet Waves, "Forever Young", was originally written for his children, and a demo recording from June (released on Biograph in ) explicitly shows this. As described by Heylin, the song is "an attempt to write something hymnal and Genre: Roots rock.
  8. General Comment This might be my favorite song on Planet Waves. I like the album because there a kind of childlikeness to the writing. Here, Dylan just cuts loose with images that strike at your real heart; and "Tough Mama" is a great case in point. It's pretty simple, really; the tough mama is .
