Before you start thinking this is yet another tribute to Merle Haggard not that anything would be wrong with that… the bottle in question is most likely filled with a special formula. Baby formula, that is. Of course, being on Bloodshot, you get a few ringers in here. In a good way, mind you.
But start something they did. By covering Merle Haggard, Leadbelly, and Helen Carter, Doe and crew opened some ears previously closed to country music. The artists on this record all owe something to the passions of John Doe and his pals — and they pay it back nicely. The artists on this disc represent the second level of American alternative country music — not a lesser amount of talent, by any means, only of recognition. Alternative country is as similar to what comes out of Nashville as punk was to mainstream rock radio.
That Give My Love To Rose - Jonboy Langford* and The Pine Valley Cosmonauts - Misery Loves Company to say, not much. The bands on here take risks, and draw from all over the musical map.
In between you hear echoes of the Opry as well as the Replacements. In Give My Love To Rose - Jonboy Langford* and The Pine Valley Cosmonauts - Misery Loves Company few years people like Robbie Fulks and Mike Ireland, among others from this record, are gonna be pretty popular. So pick up this disc, and say you knew them when. Bob Wills is such a person — ground zero for western swing.
Armed with his fiddle, a white Stetson and a good cigar, Wills listened to the sounds echoing in his head, jazz and blues mixed with old-time fiddle tunes and formed the Lightcrust Doughboys and later the renowned Texas Playboys and played what he called jazz. And jazz it was- just with a fiddle and pedal steel instead of a horn section.
It was music for working people, who would fill a roadhouse on a Saturday night looking to dance, cry and fight- and Bob Wills reigned supreme over Wont Be Long - Arlo Guthrie - Arlo Guthrie scene until his death after a coma in The body of work he left behind is firmly engraved in our musical souls- as much as any by Presley or Hank Williams.
The first steps of pioneers are generally jeered and ignored, and Wills certainly took his lumps. To punk pioneer turned insurgent country artist Jon Langford this must have sounded familiar. Langford has taken to his breast the championing of real, roots country music, the lost American art form. This lady could sing the yellow off a lemon. All in all, this is a fine salute to a man whose greatest tribute was knowing that somewhere, from a barroom in Texas to the stage of the Grand Old Opry, people took his music as their own, and used it as the soundtrack to their loves and heartbreaks.
Jon Langford and his gang clearly have. We caught up with the diva, who is working hard making sure everyone in Smoking - Various - First Strike Album free world has a Robbie Fulks record:.
Ink What prompted the move to Chicago? KH: Just wanted to scare the hell out of myself, musically and otherwise. It worked. Ink Sorry. Ink Musically, what are your plans? She says Vancouver is a dump, but it will be a different dump for me at least. What brought that about, and what was it like? KH: I just started talking to him a lot for work doing tour support for his shows and setting up interviews and all and I came to Atlanta for his Music Midtown show and we started singing together at a party that night and just liked harmonizing and everything.
I was honored that he asked me to sing with him — I think he is so amazing. Singing with him is a very powerful experience — no lie — just Save Me - American Hi-Fi - The Art Of Losing with him is a very powerful experience! And he likes pornography too…so we get along great, of course. Ink Finally, anything you want to say to the crowd in Atlanta?
